Samsung knows a broken phone is not fun. They also know the most common causes of a broken phone are water damage, and impact damage. Fortunately, you can prevent those right now. However, if you would like the core function of your phone to be waterproof, dust proof, resist scratches, and ultimately not break as easily, Samsung is proposing a solution. They are working toward releasing a rugged version of their Samsung Galaxy S4 by mid to late summer.
I have used an OtterBox case to protect my phone from wind, sand, rain, hail, and damage from dropping for years. I have used the phone on the beach (sand), and used it to film video footage after tornadoes in the middle of hard rain and hail. A Samsung Galaxy S4 OtterBox case isn’t waterproof, and dropping the phone in a pool, river, or toilet would still have a good possibility of ruining your phone. Of course, with an OtterBox defender series there’s a much better chance you could reach in and grab it quickly and it would still be ok (and keep in mind if you can’t grab your phone, it doesn’t matter if it’s got a rugged case, no case, or OtterBox case….a phone dropped in the lake or ocean may be gone for good no matter the protection).
Samsung is working on a phone that is completely waterproof though, and has named the phone the Galaxy S4 Active. The goal is for the phone to be waterproof and dust-proof. No word on it being resistant to impacts though, so a case may still help with that. But, the core function of a phone only works as long as the phone works, and a Galaxy S4 Active may be a good choice for people that run with their phone, like to use it on the slopes where it’s more likely to get snow and water on it, on the beach, around the pool, or in any “active” environment. They may also be favored for military applications where rugged and durable is preferable to the thin plastic phones that can easily break in an active pocket or back pack.
What do you think? Would you be in favor of an Active version of the Galaxy S4? How much extra would you be willing to pay for one? Can you wait until summer to see if it is actually released, or will you get an S4 now and just buy a case to keep it safe?
